I upgraded to an LG Dare and was looking for a product to rip some of my DVDs to the .3g2 format that the LG Dare plays. I downloaded and tried: ExtraDVD Ripper (Waaay to sloooow, 100% CPU load continuous); AVS Video Converter (files wouldn’t work, had to download a decryption package); Goodok DVD to 3GP Zune iPod MP4 iPhone Video Ripper (too complex an installation procedure, remove codecs, install, update codecs, too complex for most users and I’m a power user since 1981) and Gogo DVD to 3gp Converter (Freeware that works great, 55% CPU load intermittent).

Considering Gogo is freeware, and worked without fuss and lots of installation requirements, it’s a sweet simple package that just does the job!

For my LG Dare, since I like clarity and have an 8 GB microSD chip, ripping at higher bit rates made sense to me. I tried a variety of resolutions and kbs and settled on 352x288 at 768kbs as my favorite ripping combination (for those with older slower processer phones, a lower bit rate might be in order). At this bit rate, it pretty much rips at the usual play rate (i.e. a 2 hour movies will take ~2 hours to rip). At lower bitrates, it rips faster but you pay in video quality. After the file has been ripped, manually change the filename from .3gp to .3g2 before copying to the my_flix folder on your microSD chip. The files played great, just as they should. Perhaps the sound could have been amplified a little louder, but with headphones it was fine. Hope this helps others.
