Seems to be a nice program, except that it keeps giving me an unexpected error and shutting down whenever I select a particular DVD that I am very intent on ripping to my portable. Granted, it is a Japanese DVD, which may or may not be the problem.

Yeah this program makes no sense. It doesn’t like my frame rate or something: “input and output frame rate not equal”. And when it did work I could not find where the file had gone. Others have clearly had luck but it doesn’t work for me…

Installed it on vista. Works fine but if I try and convert to divx I get 4:3 screen ration with the sides of the video cut off no matter what setting I put the Zoom on. Pitty as I was looking for a DVD to divx converter for Vista. Wish there was a way for someone to help me as I dont know if I’m doing it right.

I don’t understand how this works either. Input and output frame rate not equal? How do I fix that? I can’t even rip a certain part of a movie because when I start encoding, it goes to the beginning of the film. I dunno. I need help with this.

The program worked great on a Dvd that i ripped the first time, but on a Disney Dvd, it wouldn’t rip, it yold me that an error had occured and asked me to send the error report. I beleive this has something to do with a copyright issue though.

Kevin,
If you’re ripping a segment, you need to click on ’segment’ and enter the ‘begin’ and ‘end’ time. So you need to preview and log the time of the segment you will be ripping.

Man there are some real smart ones on here. You can re-assign the area you want to save the file to, it is right above the encode button OUTPUT FOLDER if you didn’t specify one just go your c:/programs and find the programs file there you will find your file. And you have to adjust settings its just something you have to do. Do you expect everything to be handed out on a silver platter? The PROGRAM IS FREE if you want absolute perfection spend 40 bucks on another program.Newb

It’s crap. No wonder it’s free. I can figure some of it out, but it still isn’t doing what I want, plus the ripped video has patches where it skips or stalls on one spot. Could be my machine, but I think this thing has issues. It’ll only work for just the right people, apparently.
And if you don’t change the file name and location, they rip to C:/, they don’t disappear ![]()
Try doing a search on your files to find something if you lose it.

Downloaded and got it going on Vista Home Premium. Going ok except that I cannot get MPEG 4 output going. It saves the file as AVI even though I have it set up as MPEG4 output. In the output directories it will only let me update the path. I keyed in a file name say file.mp4 but still only get file.avi output. Both the output files display in the output file selection pop up so once I have keyed file.mp4 it looks like it is going to save two files - file.avi and file.mp4 and only creates file.avi - anyone else with a similar prob?

ok… i downloaded this, and i guess the install messed up. i saw some one posted a problem with not even seeing the “start encoding” button. same problem here. also, it looks like the buttons have duplicates overlapping other buttons, and the text boxes cover up the video playback window. played around with the aspect ratio, and recorded the whole movie as one segment. turns out the result was the best rip of a movie that i have. sound and video qualities a 10. if i could get this thing to install to look like the picture, i’d be in love. also, it said that it ripped it fast, but i could only get it to rip in real time.

Great ripper for experienced users who understand what ripping DVDs actually involves… and those who need absolute control/flexibility of conversion/output options. If you don’t understand video formats, codecs, frame rates, aspect ratios, and the hundreds of options/settings available, don’t bother with this. You’ll just be confused and wind up complaining that it doesn’t work. It *does* work, and it works fantastically well IF you know what you’re doing. Cheers! Nice work. (and Thanks!)

I had checked out several downloads costing up to $45, and I read the reviews before trying Free-DVD. Not sure why others had problems, but this has been the best in my new experience with ripping and conversion. Easy, intuitive, and flexible. The “frame rate not equal” prompts come up, but it seems to be simply alerting to adjustments that it makes, and I’ve seen no indications of hidden or bothersome spyware. My main projects are taking previous DVDs including my own DVD+Rs and converting them to usable files for simple Windows Movie Maker editing and online uploads. Most of the other ripper/converters had problems recognizing titles for various DVDRs and then providing a usable list from which to draw from. Free-DVD not only read them easily (as an IFO file), but it gave an understandable listing, provided easy segmenting of desired clips, and gave constant progress indications. Nothing else I found would do that. I uninstalled the rest and would recommend this program to anyone.

So far so good. I saw two comments that I thought were problems too but there are solutions. 1) Can’t find the video once encoded - there is an option on the main window (what’s your problem? are you blind?) that says: “Output Folder” which is a bit misleading because it does ask you to specify an actual file name. The other comment (which I thought was a problem) concerns the message: “frame rate not equal.” It took me a moment or two to work this out - to change this setting you actually need to look at the Input Settings (under the Settings Menu) - I agree that this is counterintuitive, but it’s there and It seems to default to PAL frame rate. In North America you need to change this to NTSC (29.97 FPS). I’m ripping now and I’ll let you all know how it goes, but after testing several products this seems to be the easiest. I agree with post #50 - If you don’t know about codecs, frame rates, video standards, etc, then do some research first. It makes a lot more sense when yoyu know about these things.

OK. DVD ripped with no problems. Those people on this board bitching about this product of full of it. No spyware (so far - if I come across any believe me, you’ll hear about it) and no crashes. I suggest that if you’re having problems with this product then look for the cause somewhere else because this did exactly what I wanted with no problems whatsoever.
And, incidently, if you’re thinking that I’m an agent for the company then you’re wrong. I have absolutely no affiliation with the producers of this - I don’t know any of them and never even heard of this program before I did a google search for a free dvd ripper. I just hate to see a good product get bagged because the users are incompetent (or stupid).

I think it’s a great program but, it took me a while to find a program that would be a loophole when it says cannot read a certain file. All you have to do is download DVD43!!! What it does is it unlocks the protection on the DVD and lets you use whatever program to rip it, such as this.

I found the ripper to work very well the first time I ran it. did have problems finding IFO files after the first rip and so have to reinstall each time I use it but I run Vista home premium which is most likely the problem. I have encountered worse problems with other programs before. for those who experience lag, try using a different player, I found lag on an AVI my friend sent me when using mediaplayer and so watched it on DIVX player. Worked fine.

Program worked great. For the problem with letterbox and distortion - under Settings -> Input Settings select Full instead of Letterbox. For the problem with input/output frames not matching, in the same settings menu select “Output Frames” to match input. If you don’t know the frames per second of the input, try one of the other two standard speeds (PAL or NTSC), as most DVDs are in one of those standards. To select the output location, press “Output folder” and then press “Browse” on the window that pops up. This will give you a “Save As…” dialog and you can choose the location.

“Input output frames were not equal” is just a warning. Two clicks to OK it and its gone. I set my output resolution to 1280 x 720, even though I bumped the res up, it still looks good. However, its gonna take over 6 hours to rip, but it will fit my entire widescreen tv perfectly.

If your having problems with finding your ripped DVD Movies save them to a diffrent folderthat YOU WILL REMEMBER. (DUH!!!) If you dont know your computer good enough to look in a pre-made folder on the C:// drive or at least search for the file nave your a real NOOB AT COMPUTERS! I’ve used this program on my newly bought Voodo computer and this program runs like a star!! No problems AT ALL! I’vew been riping full lengthed DVDs onto my Zune and i Have not experenced any… Screen issues, sound problems or failures, and the only whining i’ve heard is from you guys who cant spot a good program! Also NO spam at all!!!

Could someone explain please why it’s called “free”? My one says “Unregistered version, 30 days remain.” Doesn’t this mean I have only thirty days before I use it and have to pay???

THIS ISN’T FREE. I took the time to download, install and use it. Turns out not only is it a 30 day evaluation program, but it only rips video to 3gp. There are many other output formats, but none of them are selectable.
Thanks for wasting half an hour of my time.

ok this thing is obviously a scam. ppl that say “Oh my gosh, it is great! The best one out there! This rules - WOW!” are just ppl from the company, ppl that were told to put that, or the guy that MADE THE SOFTWARE! i will never download this stinky piece of dog shit because in earlier comments, they said it doesnt appear in Add/Remove programs. its obviously crap and a total scam and i suggest you dont bother with the free ones because they have spyware that take up your computer.

Definitely NOT free. Trial version only. Does not rip all formats and has audio lag problems and video jumps/stalls at times. Tried many different settings and still have the same problems. My computer is only a couple months old so don’t even try to blame it on that. I’ve used other dvd rippers before and most of the “free” ones are crap. They are almost all limited TRIAL versions that constantly ask you to upgrade them. Best free dvd ripper I’ve found so far is BITRIPPER. Just google it. I’ll tell you this much here and now, it works on most dvd’s and if you want ease of use, it doesn’t get much easier than BITRIPPER! Oh… The best part of all: BITRIPPER is TOTALLY FREE! No ads, no spyware, no viruses!

Wow, it is so fast to download! And it works so good! And to those of you having trouble finding the files you’ve encoded… alrighty heres my advice. Click ‘output folder’ before you start encoding. Pick a folder in ‘browse’ that you want to put it in and name it. THEN you click start encoding… and click stop when you’ve finished the section you want saved. Once it’s stopped it will save. Anyhoo, so far so good for me… hallelujah!

Maybe I spoke to soon, I was excited… is it to good to be true? I think so… after reading a bunch of your comments saying it contained spyware I ran a a virus scan using Sophos anti-virus. It detected a Trojan bug, which you usually get from ads saying ‘free ringtone’ or ‘free screensavers’. A Trojan virus IS spyware and is used to corrupt files or get into hidden files on your computer etc. I am a bit reluctant to uninstall because it does work, but I’d rather pay $45 for a reliable one that won’t cause me any trouble then have a free one full of viruses. I’m sure you’d agree. Plus, look at the advertisements and crap on this website. Hmmm… I should have looked a bit more carefully.
